In the vibrant landscape of North India, where tradition dances with modernity, emerges Abhishek Yadav — a queer photographer, who describes himself as: “[a] contemporary man of India. Sketching, curating, designing, and narrating editorials which are potent to ethno contemporary India”. In short, Abhi is on a mission to redefine beauty and expression.
Abhi's journey into the world of photography and fashion editorials began not as a glamorous tale but as a personal quest for self-discovery. "Just another bored IT guy, who thought he was ugly and undiscovered," he shares. His photography became a medium for personal expression and a catalyst for mental, physical, and social change, allowing him to "bring about a change” he wanted to see.
Abhi's creative evolution is deeply rooted in his passion for making things beautiful. Influenced by the desire to adorn his mother and sister, he delved into the world of photography from a young age. Reflecting on his journey, he notes, "I always wanted to make things look pretty... All of that when I wasn’t even a teenager." This early inclination towards aesthetics laid the foundation for a unique visual language that blends vibrant colors and traditional fabrics.
"In recent times, I have tried to harness that queer expression and that voice as a power to speak up and show what that voice can do."
Growing up in an environment where queer expression was suppressed, he now embraces his queer identity as a source of power and courage. "I am no longer afraid of it, nor embarrassed. If I show courage, and transfer some of that courage to someone else who needs it, my work is done, my art becomes valid. One life saved is a dynasty."
Influenced by iconic figures like Grace Coddington, Tonne Goodman, Diana Vreeland, Rekha, Zeenat Aman, and Iris Apfel, Abhi draws inspiration from their creativity, ideas, and personal styles.
"If there’s ever a big shoot or a personal project, I always think, ‘What would Mrs Vreeland do?’," he shares.
Words all of us could live by.
His work reflects a deep connection to his roots in Northern India, drawing from his experiences in a village and his exploration of old mythological manuscripts and scriptures.
"I come from a village in Northern India, devoid of still so many things which we have access to in the cities. I have lived that simple life. I have noticed and documented nuances of that life," Abhi shares about his cultural influences. He delves into his interest in old mythological manuscripts and scriptures, saying, "Old magazines, articles, hymns, and the era gone by, build the backbone of any concept that I want to explore."
Abhi's commitment to inclusivity is evident in his creative process. "I personally approach Indian queerness the way it has always been found," he explains. Collaborating with diverse voices and sharing stories from small cities and villages, he strives to represent the authentic experiences of the Indian queer community.
"I am happier working with kids who cannot afford to pay because I know they have new things to share. I know they will listen and will want to learn and teach me something new.”
In a world where challenges persist for queer artists, Abhi remains resilient, defying stereotypes and surprising those who doubt his capabilities. "The challenges are still the same that all of us face all over the world," he acknowledges. His art becomes a form of activism, challenging stereotypes and celebrating the beauty of queer existence. "We are considered weak, freaks, despised and disguised. We are considered unable to be able to hold a power position," Abhi reflects on the challenges faced by queer artists.
Through his lens, Abhishek Yadav brings visibility to Indian queerness, debunking misconceptions and showcasing the true diversity of queer experiences.
"I bring culture and religion into play with Indian queerness. To let people know they have existed hand in hand since the beginning of time. We have existed since the beginning of time," he emphasizes when discussing the intersection of art and activism.
Abhishek Yadav's art is a testament to the strength of vulnerability, the power of expression, and the timeless beauty found in embracing one's true self. In the ever-evolving landscape of queer artistry – Abhi's work stands out as it not only champions for authenticity, but also inspires others to create, speak up, and break free from societal constraints.
"Skill up and speak up," he advises aspiring queer artists, emphasizing the necessity of queer creation, the virtue of patience, and a commitment to art that can only be described as excellent.
